Apple CEO shows you still need to get on Weibo when marketing to China
Apple CEO Tim Cook opened a verified personal Weibo account on the 11th of May during his trip to China to announce innovative new environmental programmes. He got more than 200,000 followers after the first hour of sign-up! Three days into social life on Weibo, Tim posted 4 messages (2 original messages with translations, 1 in English and 1 translations of the English messages) and has more than half a million followers.
Tim’s 4 post till today(13th of May):
Actually, Wechat and Weibo both have a role to play: Wechat is the “Social” part of Chinese Social Media landscape and Weibo is the “Media” part. They play different roles for Chinese social media users. They use wechat to communicate with close friends, join very relevant chat groups and use it as a mobile wallet etc. They use Weibo to access news and social trends. It is shifting to a more open, public media platform.
From the accessibility point of view Weibo is more open to the western companies while wechat has more restrictions. All companies and individuals can open Weibo accounts and apply for a verified account. Only Chinese companies can apply for Wechat corporate service accounts.
